Movies

Nearly everyone enjoys watching movies, and why shouldn’t they? Movies as a form of entertainment has become commonplace throughout America due to the way it offers immediate satisfaction for our desire to be entertained.

Going to the movies has also become a social event in itself. Many people go to the movies, not necessarily to watch the movie, but to hang out with friends. The way movies have established themselves as a part of our culture is remarkable.

– 2 –

– 3 –

With all the different types of movies, there is a classification system that breaks up movies into different kinds.

There are comedies, dramas, horror, action, etc. Many films today combine several aspects from each type.

Usually when a film is released there is a premiere in which the film is shown on screen in a certain city before being released across the country for the rest of the people to watch it.

At the movie premiere, the stars of the movie attend and walk down a red carpet, while reporters and photographers interview and take pictures. After the premiere, sometimes weeks go by before the film is finally released to the rest of the cities and towns across country.

– 4 –

– 5 –

Faithful moviegoers usually attend premiers to get the first glimpse of a film before others do.

Some movies are so popular that people buy tickets for them days in advance and line up outside the theatre hours before show time.

At least people don’t wait outside theatres days before a movie comes out. To wait for days without bathing would be extreme! Movie theatres today have become so popular that some people don’t even bother going on the weekends.

They prefer to go on a Monday, for example, to avoid the crowd.

– 6 –

With theatre tickets so expensive, some people cheat and sneak into the theatre without paying, which decreases the amount of money that the movie will make since the person did not pay for a ticket. This, of course, is illegal, but many people don’t care that they have broken the law.

So next time you are at the movies, take note of certain things such as how crowded it is, what type of movie you are watching, and if anyone is trying to sneak in!

Basketball

Basketball is one of the world’s most popular sports. People of all edges enjoy playing, and watching basketball. In a basketball game, there are two teams on the court at a time with five players per team. There are also two referees nearby as well.

Their job is to keep up with the two teams and watch the game carefully so they can call any shots or illegal moves. It’s hard to coax the referee into calling off any fouls because they are usually very firm and final with their decisions.

– 2 –

– 3 –

The basketball game begins with one members of each team jumping for the ball. In order to make a basket or to block an incoming shot, the teams must think of good strategies that will give them an advantage to win. The strategies, or plays, are usually numbered (like 1, 2, or 3) by the coach.

To use this code , the player with the ball in his hands will hold up the respective number of fingers and his teammates hurry to complete the number play.

In the NBA, a full basketball game has four twelve-minute quarters. In college a game is made up of two twenty-minute halves. Although that doesn’t sound like much at first, being in constant motion for an extended period is hard work and we should praise it.

– 4 –

– 5 –

Running up and down on a huge basketball court can easily tire anyone out. It’s important to stay hydrated while you play, so always keep one or two bottles of water or a sport drink at your team’s bench. If you forget to bring one, politely ask someone to loan you theirs because it’s vital to drink when you’re thirsty- especially while participating in a basketball game.

The game ends as soon as the last second is up at the end of the fourth quarter and at this point, whichever team has more points, wins. If, by chance, both teams have the same number of points, they go into overtime and play another short quarter until someone wins.

Every single basket is important in a game – you never know when it could be the game-winning point. With the help and strategy of the coach and the individual effort of all its members, a team can slowly reach the winning goal of victory.

Jobs

Later in your life, you will have to make some important choices. A particularly important choice you will have to make in the future is about your career. When you were younger, you probably fantasized and thought about what it would be like to become a firefighter, a police officer, or even to run for President.

These jobs must have seemed like the best of the best to you as a child, but as you grow, you may find that your choices change, and you begin dreaming of becoming something else.

Teenagers babysit for friends and neighbors to make a little extra money. Babysitting? That sounds easy, but those who have spent their days handing out time-outs to children and playing endless board games with little toddlers would highly disagree. A babysitter needs to have patience, manners, and friendliness. If you’d like to became a school teacher, babysitting will give you the opportunity of being responsible for children.

Perhaps, instead, you’d like to become an interior designer because you have a talent for matching colors and patterns. You may have to suggest the style and colors for a including bed comforters to the draperies. What are the requirements for a designer like this? Creativity, an open mind, and a sophisticated taste are all required.

Maybe you’ve set yourself on the path to becoming a veterinarian. Those pet doctors must have a love for animals as they nurse the dogs and felines to the best of health. Any kind of doctor, even an animal doctor, has to be organized, intelligent, and willing.

There are so many career paths to choose from: an author with his novels, a lawyer with his briefcase full of court files, or even a photographer who snaps endless photographs. The possibilities really are endless, and it’s not hard to choose once you set your heart and mind on the thing you love most.

– 6 –

Like every other job, there are different rules to follow, obligations, and commitments you must make. Without strong values, it will be impossible to go above and beyond the minimum standard of your career. As long as you keep your mind set and ready, your eyes open, and your spirit eager to work, there’s no way you can fail.

Swimming

One of the most fun and healthiest activities you can participate in is swimming. Chances are that you have been swimming at least a few times, either at a friend’s house, the local pool in your neighborhood, or in your backyard if you have pool.

We spend the majority of the hours of our day, if not the whole day, dry so the pool provides a refreshing alternative that is a great way to cool down and relax. Especially during the summer months, when it can get hot, the pool is a popular destination.

There are many different games you can play as well at the pool, from pretending to be a shark to being a knight in shining armor rescuing a princess by untying the knot by which she is bound.

– 2 –

– 3 –

Swimming at the beach is also popular and fun. There are several pieces of equipment you can bring along to make it fun, such as buckets and shovels to build sand castles.

Sunscreen is also important, since you’re likely to be exposed to sunlight for an extended period of time. Through swimming, we exercise most of the muscles in our body, from the arms to our legs, so it is a great way to stay in shape. And you have a couple of options of where to do it, either at the beach or a nearby pool.

– 4 –

– 5 –

Although the pool offers many benefits, it is important to be careful when playing around the pool. First of all, the ground will always be wet from people going in and out of the pool. So it is important not to run, or you may slip and hurt yourself. You should also be careful not to jump in the shallow end of the pool.

You can severely hurt yourself from your body hitting the bottom of the pool. Such precautions are important to keep in mind, and the lifeguards usually write these rules or have a sign for everyone to see in case you forget. Perhaps you already knew these rules, but it never hurts to be reminded of them.

– 6 –

After you’re done swimming, wrap a towel around yourself to dry off and to minimize the water that will drip and make the ground slippery. Before you enter your car, you may want to wring out the wet towels to keep the excess water from dripping in the car. All in all, swimming is a fun way to spend time with friends or family, so whenever you get the chance, go swimming!

Recess

The school day can be long and boring for many students, filled with seemingly unexciting information, strict teachers, and perhaps bullies.

But even with all that, it may be all worth it for one word: recess. Perfectly placed right in the middle of the day to provide a much-needed break, recess is a time of fun, imagination, and freedom. It is nearly opposite from the structure that is present during the rest of the school day.

– 2 –

– 3 –

In class you must sit still, almost like a statue, and listen to the teacher. In the classroom, you cannot run or scream. You most likely aren’t allowed to have extended conversations with your classmates while the teacher speaks.

In the classroom your classmates are like strangers. On the playground you have almost all the freedom you need to run around, shout, and not think about math or reading! You are lucky to have a recess, since adults do not. They don’t get to take a break in the middle of their workday to go play on the playground.

How jealous they must be! During recess you do not worry about the future or any homework or tests.

– 4 –

All that matters is the hide-and-seek game you’re playing and how to find and capture your friends. But of course, after recess ends you must go back to the classroom and begin learning again. Your teacher makes arrangements to have you work on different projects, and it will probably not be as much fun as recess.

Even if your desk was replaced with comfortable furniture allowing you to lie down instead of sit, the classroom would still be less fun than recess. You may feel that there is no justice in the world, but remember that you will always have recess again the next day.

– 5 –

Enjoy recess as much as you can because it will not always be there. When you grow older, you will no longer have recess, consequently you should make the most of your time having fun outside on the playground.

Zoo

The zoo is one of the most interesting and social places for children. Chances are that most of you have been to a zoo at least once. With an abundance of different types of animals, the zoo is a unique adventure filled with intrigue and excitement.

– 2 –

– 3 –

Most of the animals at zoos we do not get to see in our everyday experiences, and that is what makes zoos special. From polar bears to giraffes to flamingos, the zoo has it all. Where else can you go to see such animals in one place? Most of the animals are common, but only exist in specific regions around the world. You would have to travel around the world to see all the animals if it were not for zoos. The zoo brings them all to one location for everyone to enjoy.

Making the decision to go to the zoo will usually be one that you won’t regret, even if you’ve already been there.

– 4 –

There is so much to see that you probably would have to make several visits before you see everything. So if you need a break from doing homework involving multiplication and division problems, go to the zoo! There are so many animals at the zoo that you can practice math by simple addition: just add up all the types of animals you see. Videogames

Perhaps the most popular hobby today of adolescents is video games. Nothing else quite like it exists that attracts kids so intensely.

As much joy as it causes kids, it often causes as much agony for parents as they wrestle with their kids to not play so much. Video games became popular with the original Nintendo system released in the 1980s.

The Super Mario Brothers video game instantly became a classic and helped Nintendo introduce itself into millions of homes. Stores filled their aisles with the gaming system but all the shelves were emptied almost as soon as they were filled as customers rushed in to purchase the games.

– 2 –

– 3 –

Soon after the boom of Nintendo, demand for more gaming systems increased and the video game industry has become more popular every year.

Gaming systems that were part of the movement after the original Nintendo release include Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Playstation I, Playstation II, Xbox, Xbox 360, and most recently Playstation IV and Nintendo Wii.

With each system becoming more technologically advanced, video games have actually become quite complicated. Instead of wrinkling up the instruction manual and throwing it away, it is now important to read the fine print that comes with the game console.

As mentioned before, parents often have issues with their children spending too much time playing video games. Many games today are also violent and bloody, featuring guns and knives.

– 4 –

That is another reason for concern for parents. Consequently game companies have taken the initiative to create educational games that kids enjoy and that will stimulate their brain with relevant knowledge. Featuring fun exercises like rhyming, for example, game companies have found a way to make playing video games fun and educational.

– 5 –

When comparing all the different types of video game systems, it is difficult to tell which one is the best. Some people prefer the simplicity of the Nintendo Wii, while others prefer the glistening case of the Playstation IV.

To be honest, it really depends on each individual’s opinion as to which game console is better. Many people still prefer the original Nintendo from the 1980s! It is up to you to decide. Whichever one you prefer will be the right fit for you.

Remember to not spend too much time playing video games. Staring at the TV screen can hurt your eyes and pressing buttons for hours can hurt your wrists, not to mention the overall task can be quite exhausting after hours of playing! So remember to have fun, but don’t overdo it!

Snow

Snow can be one of the most fun things. It’s fun to slide on and make snowballs out of, but not very fun to shovel. Snow seems rather simple, but its formation is quite complex.

When the temperature around the clouds chills to around 32° F, water particles can freeze into ice crystals with dust or other tiny particles in the air.

– 2 –

– 3 –

Water molecules are made up of one oxygen and two hydrogen molecules. When water freezes, the hydrogen molecules combine to form six-sided crystals of ice called “snow crystals.”

Snowflakes are made up of many snow crystals stuck together. Snowflakes are usually less than half an inch long, but can be as big as the palm of your hand sometimes. The shape of a snow crystal depends on the temperature at which it forms as it falls through the air.

Sometimes they thaw a little and then refreeze. Different types of crystals thrive at different temperatures. A difference of just one degree can change how it looks completely! Next time it’s snowing around you, try to catch a snowflake to see what shape has formed

– 4 –

Although snow can be fun most of the time, sometimes the weather becomes extreme and therefore dangerous. It can be enough to frighten even the bravest of people. Snowstorms cause a tremendous amount of damage, so you should definitely avoid going outside during one. Always be wary before you journey out when it is snowing.

– 5 –

Now you know a little bit more about the snow we all enjoy. It is fun to play in but it can also be dangerous. If you are out in the cold too long you can easily get sick. If you are shivering, then it is probably too cold to stay outside.

Make sure that an adult is watching you just in case, because nobody wants to perish from the cold. Popular things to do in the snow include building snowmen, sledding, making snow angels, and, of course, snowball fights! It seems wherever there is snow, there are people challenging each other to snowball battles.

Sometimes it can get intense with teams making shields, creating fortresses, and charting territory. It may seem shocking, but it happens. However as long as you have fun and nobody gets hurt, enjoy it while it lasts because the snow may melt away soon!

Picnics

Picnics are a popular way to enjoy a beautiful day and spend time with others. A typical picnic involves eating a meal outdoors with friends or family, ideally taking place in a scenic spot.

Picnics are often family-oriented, however they can also be an occasion between just two people, or a large get-together such as a church picnic.

– 2 –

– 3 –

During picnics, two important things to remember are to bring along a picnic basket and a blanket. Outdoor games or some other form of fun are also common at picnics. If it is sunny outside, you should bring sunscreen so you do not get sunburned.

Also, there are sometimes annoying bugs and mosquitoes, depending where you are, so to be safe you should also bring bug spray. It is difficult to avoid bugs completely when you’re outdoors, but you can eliminate most of them with certain precautions. Silverware, napkins, plates, and glasses are other necessities, and perhaps most importantly, do not forget to bring the food!

Depending on the number of people at the picnic, you will need to determine the amount of supplies to bring.

– 4 –

Since picnics take place outside, you should be careful not to get soil on your clothes while running around having all that fun!

– 5 –

One other precaution you should take when you are having a picnic in rural area, is to watch for plants or flowers that may be poisonous. If you are in doubt then do not take any chances.

Avoiding those plants and announcing to others the possible danger would be the right choice to make. You may want to bring some kind of soothing powder for rashes just in case you get an allergic reaction from plants or flowers.

The term “picnic” first originated to mean a potluck, a gathering at which each person contributed some kind of food to a common table for everyone to share. The first use of the word dates back to a 16th century French book, describing a group of people dining in a restaurant who brought their own wine.

Luckily the concept of picnics has remained popular to this day.

– 6 –

If you have never been on a picnic, you should definitely go whenever you get the chance. Where else do you get the chance to eat, play games, enjoy the outdoors, and spend time with friends and family all at once? If you doubt that it will be fun, just ask anyone who has been on a picnic before, or go on one for yourself!

That way you will be having fun and practicing math at the same time.

– 5 –

One of the toughest things for zoos to accomplish is to create an environment that is natural for each animal.
