Immigrants

The United States of America is a nation known as a “melting pot.” The U.S. is a nation of immigrants in which many religions are practiced and many different languages are spoken. It is a beautiful country that embraces everyone who has the need or desire to come. The U.S. is a free nation and offers many opportunities and education to all.

Reasons Why Immigrants Migrated to America

Many immigrants shared a common dream when they immigrated to America in search of a “better way of life.” The dream with which most immigrants came was that they would find a job which allowed them to accomplish their dreams. Immigrants also came to:
• Escape war or avoid forced military service; and

• Escape ethnic and religious persecution.

Most of the first immigrants came from northern Europe, especially Germany, Ireland, and England. In the 1880s, immigrants came from many different nations in southern and eastern Europe such as Italy, Poland, Greece, and many other countries.

Although America was a land of hopes and dreams for many, it was a land of disillusionments for others. Immigrants in America faced many different problems. The inability to speak English was the most common problem that the majority of these immigrants faced. Also, many of these immigrants were limited in both skills and education. Most of the jobs that the immigrants could find paid low, “immigrant wages,” and, due to their circumstances, they were frequently forced to live in decaying neighborhoods or urban slums.

The immigrants also faced a lack of acceptance by “Americans” (Europeans who had been settled in their adopted country for a number of generations) and other groups. One of those groups included people such as members of Congress who opposed such an unexpected and large influx of foreigners.

Immigrants came to the U.S. with the hope of finding a better life through freedom and economic opportunity. However, they soon discovered the harsher realities of living in this new land. Courage and determination were essential in order for them to survive in the “Promised Land.” The immigrants who came to America were, for the most part, poor peasants who had come under the belief that the U.S. was a land where they could improve their way of life.
