(Andre and Manolo enter the train station’s main office. Manolo’s supervisor is sitting at a desk. The office is small and it is decorated with newspaper articles.)

Supervisor: I received your email, but I don’t understand why you want to resign from your position in the train station as a train conductor.

Manolo: When I started working here I thought this was the best job in the world. Going from train to train checking tickets to see if people had paid or not. What could be cooler than that (Looking at Andre)?

Andre: Even I would like a job like that.

Manolo: But, I am going to help my new friend Andre Borjes find the magic ball.

Andre: I am not going to tell you the whole story, but if we don’t find the magic ball, the whole world may be in danger.

– 3 –

Supervisor: (shaking his head.) What kind of danger?

Andre: The magic ball was made for good and evil. I know a beautiful girl whose life has been destroyed because she asked for the wrong wishes to be granted.

Supervisor: You can ask the magic ball to grant your wishes?

Manolo: Yes, like the story of Aladdin and the magic lamp. This is the story of Andre and the magic ball.

Andre: Or the story of Andre and the crying girl.

– 4 –

Supervisor: This is the craziest thing I have ever heard. (Touching his ears.) I don’t understand why someone would leave their job to go and look for a ball, but…here is your check (Handing an envelope to Manolo). Come back if you ever need a job.

Manolo: I don’t think so. After I find the magic ball, I am going to wish to be rich.

Supervisor: (as Manolo is leaving the office.) If you find the magic ball, don’t forget about me.

(Andre and Manolo are inside of the train, on their way to Los Cocuyos. The train is old and the sound of the wheels on the steel tracks is loud, so Andre and Manolo are chatting loudly.)

Andre: The first thing we are going to do is buy a hat, then we will find Chiquis’s father. He needs to go and see his daughter. Then, we will look for the magic ball.

Manolo: This is scary.

Andre: Yes, that’s why we need to protect everyone from the magic ball. Everyone needs to know in case someone finds it. The whole world needs to be warned.

Manolo: I will stand outside the train station, and when people get ready to buy their train ticket, I will warn them.

Andre: Yes, we can stand outside churches, stadiums, theaters, funeral homes- everywhere.

– 7 –

Manolo: Funeral homes? Are we going to warn dead people too?

Andre: No. Not dead people, but their relatives, so that it will not happen to them too.

Manolo: We will warn the whole world about what could happen to them if they find the ball.

Andre: Make sure that you tell them that the sneaky ball has ruined more than one good man.

Manolo: How scary. If it wasn’t for you, I would be so scared that I would lock myself in my house all day and night.

– 8 –

Manolo: Funeral homes? Are we going to warn dead people too?

Andre: No. Not dead people, but their relatives, so that it will not happen to them too.

Manolo: We will warn the whole world about what could happen to them if they find the ball.

Andre: Make sure that you tell them that the sneaky ball has ruined more than one good man.

Manolo: How scary. If it wasn’t for you, I would be so scared that I would lock myself in my house all day and night.

– 9 –

Andre: Unfortunately, nothing will help because if it wants to make your or anyone’s life impossible, it will. It can do anything with its magic powers.

(An old man that was listening to their conversation interrupts them.)

Old man: Oh my! How awful! Tell me. Please tell me everything you know.

(Andre and Manolo are getting off the train at Los Cocuyos)

Manolo: Finally, we are here! Where do we start?

Andre: I think we should go to the police station first.

Manolo: Great idea.

(Andre and Manolo enter the police station.)

Policeman: What is your name?

Andre: My name is Andre.

Policeman: What is your last name?

Andre: Borjes.

Policeman: How old are you?

Andre: I am 18 years old.

Policeman: What is your address?

– 12 –

Andre: I live at 560 Tonto Avenue, Apt. # 3, in Los Adoloridos subdivision.

Policeman: Your telephone number?

Andre: My number is 956-943-0008.

Policeman: Do you have any identification with you?

Andre: Yes sir. Here it is. I also have my vaccination record and my report card from the second grade.

Policeman: Are you in high school?

– 13 –

Andre: Yes.

Policeman: Why are you giving me your 2nd grade scores?

Andre: Because my 2nd grade scores are much better than my high school ones.

Policeman: What do you want to report?

Andre: First, I want to state that I am the owner of the magic ball, but I am not responsible for the disasters it can cause.

Policeman: How can you prove that you are the owner of that ball?

– 14 –

Andre: It has my name engraved on the bottom of the ball. It’s my ball not because I wanted it, but because my father insisted that it be mine.

Policeman: This is the first time that someone has filed a report on a ball. Was it stolen?

Andre: No, it disappeared right before my eyes.

Policeman: Someone must have taken it.

– 15 –

Andre: No, I am telling you that it disappeared right before my eyes.

Policeman: Please sit down and wait here. I will be right back.

(Andre is in the waiting room with Manolo, sitting next to a middle-aged man wearing a hat. The man is short and stocky, and has very little hair. His arms are full of tattoos.)

Man: Why are you here?

Andre: To give a statement.

Man: Have you robbed a bank?

Andre: No.

Man: Did you ride your bicycle without a permit?

Andre: No.

Man: Did you play your music too loud at night?

Andre: No.

Man: Well, then I don’t have any idea what kind of statement you are giving.

– 18 –

Andre: About the magic ball.

Man: Really?

Andre: Yes.

Man: Are you the owner of the magic ball? Are you a magician? Can you make things disappear?

Andre: No, no, no.

Manolo: Of course not. You are looking at a celebrity. A future hero. A hero that is going to save the entire world.

– 19 –

Andre: (To Manolo, making a foul face.) That’s enough… regular people don’t need to know the details.

Man: Are you on a secret mission? Are you an F.B.I. Agent? Are you a famous hero?

Manolo: He is Andre Borges, a direct descendant of Pancho Villa. He is eighteen years old and the owner of a ball that was created for both good and evil.

Man: You don’t look like Pancho Villa.

– 20 –

Manolo: He is medium height, and his hair and eyes are brown. He has two eyes and a nose like Pancho Villa.

Man: But, Pancho Villa did not have a Roman nose, nor did he have such a big mouth, nor was he cross-eyed, and you are definitely not what I would call handsome.
