Women’s Fight for the Vote
Why did women struggle so long for the right to vote without success?
Women struggled because brewery and tavern owners spread the rumor that, if women voted, a law would be passed banning all alcoholic beverages.
rumor was repeated by the alcohol lobby throughout the states with the same success. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton both worked actively for the cause for over 50 years in spite feof defeats.

Unfortunately, they did not live long enough to see the 19th amendment to the Constitution give women the vote in 1920. Two years after the men voted in the 18th amendment, the suffrage amendment was passed when the prohibition against alcohol became law. The alcohol lobby that had kept women from getting the vote all those years was eliminated by the 18th amendment.
